Understanding how AI video chat works starts with what gets built first: the character, not the picture. Each persona is authored — a temperament, a pace, a way of dodging or pressing — and that document is what the text engine performs. Your message arrives, the engine reads it against the character sheet and the running thread, and composes her answer in that voice. Seconds, not minutes, because nothing waits on a human performer being available or willing.

The portrait is generated separately and then mounted, once, as a still.
